For many years De Kooning worked in commercial art and could not devote himself to his artistic dreams. De Kooning, encouraged by a like-minded group of artists in New York, pursued to paint for himself.

De Kooning mixed and sanded charcoal into and onto the paint surfaces, intentionally smearing the brighter colors. The artist's more gestural technique of paint use can be seen in the methods he developed around the 1960s.

In 1963, de Kooning relocated from New York City to Springs, in East Hampton, Long Island. He designed and built a tall, butterfly-roofed, light-filled studio and home in a peaceful, wooded area where he operated through the sixties before moving in perpetually in 1971.
