Artist a day!
ROY LICHTENSTEIN
(1923-1977)
Roy Fox Lichtenstein was an American artist. During the 1960s, together with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist, he became a leading figure in the new pop art movement. His art described the assumption of pop art via parody.
He was often accused of emulating comics as they were. Artist himself said that he created changes to the pictures – right down to the tiniest placement of individual dots. He was also criticized for utilizing very basic painting methods.
The most pricey Lichtenstein ever may be his 1962 painting "Masterpiece", which was onetime held by Agnes Gund. Steven Cohen reportedly offered her $165 million for it in 2017 in a private sale. Gund then utilized the money to fund a new enterprise focused on mass imprisonment, criminal justice, and the arts.
“I don't think that I'm over his influence but they probably don't look like Picassos; Picasso himself would probably have thrown up looking at my pictures.”
