PAUL CÉZANNE
(1839-1906)
“Cézanne is the father of us all”
This phrase has been given to both Picasso and Matisse, and it certainly matters little who said it because it is true in both cases.
Taking the flow of fresh look that Impressionism represented, Cézanne left the entire Impressionist group behind and developed his painting style. That contributed to innovations in painting and gave birth to Cubism and the rest of the 20th-century avant-garde.
