JOHN CONSTABLE
(1776-1837)
John Constable RA was a British landscape painter. Born in Suffolk, he's known for being the first of this genre to paint scenes from his birthplace, like Dedham.
John Constable has become famous for his paintings of the English countryside, particularly that of his home region- the Stour valley. This unique area became known as "Constable country".
John Constable was most famous for paintings dealing with rural life.
John Constable's work is some of the most treasured and extensively considered British art. Many examples of landscape paintings are for sale online and at an auction.
Constable is one of the best painters who rejected bravura styles in favor of realistic scenes. He believed that most paintings in his day were too theatrical and preferred to paint landscapes as they should be seen, without any exaggeration.
John wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821 that he should 'paint his own places best'. His paintings have been widely recognized. Most famously, he completed Dedham Vale in 1802 and The Hay Wain in 1821.
"My canvas soothes me into forgetfulness of the scene of turmoil and folly - and worse - of the scene around me. Every gleam of sunshine is blighted to me in the art at least. Can it therefore be wondered at that I paint continual storms? "Tempest o'er tempest roll'd" - still the "darkness" is majestic."
