Georg Baselitz is an internationally renowned German artist, who has been painting and sculpting since the 1960s. He became well-known for his expressive figurative paintings.
In order to slow down his painting process, Baselitz started painting his motifs upside-down. Not only does this help him paint better, but it also makes the viewer take a little more time to figure out what they're looking at.
To irritate the viewer, the artist often turns his work upside down. As he claims, people pay closer attention when their sense of balance is disturbed.
The artist is not responsible to any one. His social role is asocial... his only responsibility consists in an attitude to the work he does.
