Carl Andre  (b.1935) 

Carl Andre is an American artist who uses Minimalism to create his art. He is best known for being organized and having a linear, grid-like system in arranging his sculptures.

What inspired Carl Andre? Influences. Carl Andre was influenced by hard-line minimalists such as Constantin Brancusi and Frank Stella.

Brancusi used simple shapes to refine his sculpture, leading to similar decisions in Andre's late 50s pieces that had carved away matter so that eventually, the work became a block or cube of material.
